Takeley Local History Society: Review May 2007

The Society has had another successful year and the membership currently stands at over 50. Meetings are held at least 4 times a year and we are grateful to at Takeley Primary School who allow us to hold our meetings in their hall. We also have one local outing. Last year was to Bush End Church and the Forest and this year on August 14th we will visit Little Canfield Church.

In addition to the Bush Ed and Forest visit in the year since this last Assembly we have had:

3 October, Speaker: Jacqueline Cooper, CLAVERING CASTLE, A MYSTERIOUS MOATED MONUMENT

28 November, AGM and Speaker Jack Wright. THE BRITISH TELEPHONE SERVICE 1937-1980.

6 February Speaker John Drury, Essex Workhouses

8 May Speaker Sarah Turner. The Bishop's Stortford Museum, Its Role, Its Collection, Its Aims

Apart from the speakers our other activities include:

Two new books have been published in the last year;

Characters and Events (Vol 1) by Pat Salmon
Takeley – The Street by N.Watkiss, J.Monk. A.Yates. S.Deeley

And soon to come out will be a book on Brewer’s End. This will bring the total to 19 different titles for sale. We have currently sold over 1500 booklets in total. Others planned include books on Bassingbourne Hall, Waltham Hall, Smiths Green, Allotments, Bambers Green to name just some of them.

It would seem to be many decades since there were any Takeley village postcards for sale so we have put that right and there are now two postcards with 4 Takeley views on each.

Last year I reported that we had completed the recording of the memorials in the churchyard. This year I can add to that all of the memorials in the chapel burial ground as well.

Some of our members continue to find details of our history in distant records offices and this all adds to our understanding of Takeley History.

People continue to send us emails from around the world when they find our website. Mostly these are from people interested in Takeley and tracing their Takeley families and we are often able to help them.
